Notes
- Activism turned to headline grabbing, but the headlines twisted the story and became negative. Move to independent media.
- Our right to have accurate data to make our own decisions.
- Replace. Regulate. Resist. Radicalise. Four core responses. When the four work together, we have more impact and reach. The condition for revoluton in the media landscape.
- Don’t just replace existing media. Don’t just regulate exisiting media.
- What if we bring civil resistance to the media landscape? Media liberation day, 5th November. Protests outside media HQs across the UK & Europe. Small actions over newspapers.
- Point towards new social platforms -> mo-me.social & Mo-Me App -> https://mo-me.me/
- Add a doorway to the Fediverse which includes a feed of trusted media.
- Liz wants to find a community of sympathetic & supportive people/orgs - get in touch!
- We need decentralised social media to help people have awareness of what is happening in the world without going through mainstream platforms/news.
- XR & Hacked Off will help spread the message that there is another way.
- William: There are ‘big’ names who use the Social Web but they don’t promote it or don’t engage on it
- William: People are on the systems but they don’t understand them. They don’t get why it matters. They don’t have the audience to share their message.
- Businesses used to pay people to look in their window. More people would come and look in the window. We need to replicate this. -> Media Liberation Day.
- 27 Supporters onboard. 400 thousand on email.
- Might not be huge, but it can pave the way for next year.
- How do we get everyone to agree and jump together?
- Jaz-Michael: The French Quit X day in January has some good lessons learned/did a good job publicity wise: https://helloquittex.com/-Those-media-organisations-and-people-are-quitting-X-.html
- Jaz-Michael: Media orgs who run their own Fedi services https://jaz.co.uk/projects/orgs-using-ap/
- Jaz-Michael: Make a Channel out of the media orgs above.
- Jaz-Michael: Highlight that they aren’t the first. There are already media orgs and governments on the Social Web.
- If you want independent, well-regulated media, here is the Channel @mediarevolution@channel.org
- Jaz-Michael: Some images don’t have ALT text. If this is improved more posts might be picked up on the Social Web.
- Call for volunteers!!
- How can an org get involved with Media Liberation Day?
- Some protests happening outside news organizations. Use placards that show malignant headlines, and the alternative framing. Post photos flipping over the photo
- Print headlines and cover over local papers.
- Leaving (X) Party / Welcome Party.
- ‘We’ can help promote.
- A cat meowed, very profound.
- William: Put out a public letter, get big names to endorse, with that move them to a presence on the Fediverse. Get comfortable. Then, a ‘drop dead date’, from this point you stop using the old system.
- Health notice style actions.
- The buddy system, pair new users with an experienced user. People who are happy to help the newbie. #buddyplease
