Notes
- “What would be needed to build a decentralized, federated, user-friendly, sustainable professional network application supporting the needs of professionals, companies and recruiters? Can we please get a LinkedIn alternative?”
- An easy way to migrate from LinkedIn to the alternative(s).
- Extending ActivityPub.
- Hyper8 (sp?) - tool to create a website on your desktop - aimed at artists.
- Create application you can share on your own web-site, that shared resume, maybe shared via ActivityPub or RSS, etc.
- Charles: something already in development (ProToGo): https://mastodon.social/@reiver/113905981068154932
- Charles: noticed a new user-experience pattern that LInkedIn isn’t doing; ProToGo is designing for that new pattern.
- Maybe also focus on skills, and what boards you are on, rather than just jobs.
- Make it so can install on your own web-site, while also working with large shared sites.
- Maybe should think about this in terms of “ownership” rather than “hosting”, as some people don’t have technical background to self-host.
- We should ask ourself, “why don’t people already have their own domain?”, “why don’t they have their ownsite already?”. This may help us understand how to design for these people.
- Book mentioned: “Move Slowly and Build Bridges”, by Robert W. Gehl.
- Reverse-engineer the LinkedIn export format, so can import it seemlessly.
- LinkedIn has the edge of common connections (to see who is connected to whom).
- People in Academia might want something similar to Academia.edu (to share papers, etc).
- Some in Academia use LinkedIn for Science communication.
