Notes

  • Question: when building products and digital spaces online, are there questions or challenges you have about getting healthier outcomes?
    • Jesse: how do you get people to use apps with healthy design instead of the addictive apps? (i.e., how to make them want to eat their vegetables?)
    • Ivan: I’d like to see pro-social design have a fediverse presence, to research with fediverse participants, and to work side-by-side with developers so that they can develop based on the research
    • Gilles: it’s good to get feedback for software you are building, and it’s very hard to build without that feedback. But as a user, I have thought, who am I to give feedback to developers?
  • Julia: worked with Reddit mods and Wikipedia communities to do research; there is always some kind of connection in the community, may have their own goals and values
  • Ivan: what are the next steps for Prosocial Design Network?
  • Julia: assessing fedi folks interest in Prosocial Research. Currently working with Roblox to study how to create healthy, engaging spaces. Hoping to get funding to do a convening for next year focused on communities.
  • Ivan: an idea: share one pattern from the library on a regular basis, could even propose some as FEPs and work with developers to encourage adoption of these UX patterns
  • Better Feeds - what can you do in between engagement maximization algorithms and purely chronological feeds? How can you give people more agency and options in how to tune their feed algorithm
  • Gilles: when I would open facebook, I didn’t really know why I opened it, I just felt an urge. If you have a new app, you would like to know which needs you are providing for them with functionality
  • Ivan: try to overcome infinite scrolling; when you login, you don’t go straight to the feed, you go to a dashboard. gives you more agency
  • Julia: what is the healthy thing we want to create vs. how do we transition people over to this new thing?
  • Travis: we are still doing the 20-year-ago view of pulling in feeds of data from the database. How do we mirror the real world better? Are these 3-d spaces? What is the equivalent to going to the coffee shop?
  • Gilles: have been planning to set up a local server for Basel, envisions an event dashboard
