Notes
- Liz suggests buddy system for new person, the first person to guide new people
- Speaks about news clubs (book clubs but for news) as a safe space to talk about the news and what’s missing, asks how this can be brought into the Fediverse
- Suggests Leaving/Joining parties on Media Liberation Day - 5th November (and beyond)
- Olivia - Question - is lemmy as a link aggregator not like this? i.e https://lemmy.world/c/world
- Pippa/Phil talks about instances as community hubs rather than just point on to the fediverse
- They could help build communities, but they would need to be smaller
- Ian thinks about the welsh/local instances
- Asks what would an ActivityPub client built around communities look like?
- Alexis wants to talk about building communities on the Fediverse and will be building communities on toot.wales, e.g. for students in Wales, the disabled in Wales, regular quizzes open to all.
- Ian will talk about the last time he talked about the online dating manifesto, wonders if there is tools which could enable connection at a human scale
- Ian talks about the various Mastodon instances being too large to reflect a community and the community’s values.
- Ian speaks about fediverse users tending to gravitate to large instances
- Alexis, mentions how different waves of people come with different expections and the clash of them
- Olivia wants to mention:
- The implosion of guppe, https://social.growyourown.services/@homegrown/115208333014669796, (https://about.fedigroups.social/)
- The separation between the fediverse and the threadiverse and
- #monsterdon as an example of community-via-hashtag
- Lots of talk about having different accounts for Idenity and there is a mention about cryptographic signatures are being worked on to solve part of this.
- Sounds like it needs more usecases?
- Unattributed - wants to be able to see another server’s feed from their home server
- Jon - affirms there isn’t a sense of community in big servers but there is a sense of community in the small servers but how to find the right small server? (Also, being in a small server can limit how one sees the fedivers)
- The information about how to find a good small instance is scattered all over the place (such as their 5000 word blog post, who wants to read that?) https://privacy.thenexus.today/resources-for-choosing-instances/
- Alexis says that community is a big thing about the fediverse and if we want to shift things we have to ensure that is the big selling point
- How do we ensure the fediverse is welcoming to people who don’t have in person connections
- If there was a/multiple solutions to connect people, it would be a good ice breaker.
- Bit like Follow
- Ian suggests using a bot to…
- The bot was called @tweetfoxy
- It sounds like he’s talking about parallel play much like what some folks do on discord
- Parallel play is powerful and has incrediblly useful wellbeing energy
- Ian mentions - The future of social report - https://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/articles/2025-06-social-media-change-issues-problems-report
- Salim - talks about wanting to get back to hacking and running unconferance. Wants to know if there’s a way to use Fediverse tech to…help people find their first friends
- Ian - Social Object Theory
- Liz - If you need a DJ, Ian DJs live using a Pacemaker device :) «this sounds very intriguing (please connect with me on @mediarevolution@mo-me.me ! )
- I started a peertube - https://cubicgarden.info/videos/browse
