From Babette, who works on communication for Dutch academia (research project on academic staff engagement on Mastodon):

People were more likely to join Mastodon if their peers were on it, rather than just from a recommendation
Lack of institutional support is a major challenge
Support by public institutions who are already present in the fediverse is crucial
