Future of ActivityPub standardization and related subjects with W3C SWICG
/2023-03/session/2-w3c/
Convener: Johannes Ernst (@j12t@social.coop)
Conducted as both a FediForum session and a W3C Social Web Incubator Community Group meeting.
Participants:
- varying, up to 46 Zoom participants (the W3C meeting notes below only reflect those people who used the W3C group’s IRC to sign-in)
Objective:
- Collect views on the future of ActivityPub (and related) standardization
- Emerge with some sense of common direction (or be more clear about where disagreements may lie)
- A couple of next steps
Setting the stage:
- Given the turmoil at Twitter, a once-in-a-generation opportunity has opened for decentralized, user-centric social networking
- Networks are valuable; Big Social extracts most of that value
- Big idea: a network where all that value goes to its users; open networks are more valuable;
- Everybody can connect; no gatekeeper
- Informal meeting, no intellectual property will be exchanged
Then, the group decided to proceed as the SWICG has in the past; the remaining meeting notes are on the W3C website: https://www.w3.org/2023/03/29-social-minutes.html
