Notes

  • PeerTube natively supports crossposting from TikTok.

  • Micro.blog allows for videos imported from TikTok to PeerTube to then be reposted on to Mastodon, Bsky, etc.

  • Bridgy.Fed kind of does PeerTube: https://github.com/snarfed/bridgy-fed/issues/2267 – Ryan Barrett

  • A lot of creators are resistant to sharing stuff on Open Social is because they don’t make ad revenue off it and see it as losing money – Alexis

  • Creators want a vertical scrolling feed rather than the traditional YouTube model.

  • Posting only on PeerTube gets no views/reactions, it’s only when that gets posted to other platforms that it starts gaining traction – Zoyander Street

  • There needs to be a social container built by humans around the videos. Building a social context is really important for the Fediverse to work – Zoyander Street

  • Metrics for artists are geared one way so building a community is not in the frame. It’s really hard to sell the Fediverse to other people with “4 people saw it and then also donated and are genuinely fans” rather than “1000 people hit like.” Humans aren’t good at thinking about the long term. – Ian Forrester

  • Kevin Kelly’s “1000 true fans” – Ian Forrester & Ryan Barrett

  • I find it really difficult to comment on to PeerTube, can’t log in with Mastodon to leave a comment. I’m more likely to copy the video onto Mastodon and say I like it beacuse that’s easier. I’ve been sharing lots of PeerTube videos on my Signal Stories. PeerTube needs to make it easier for people to leave comments. – Olivia

  • You can comment on PeerTube posts from a Mastodon account but you have to copy the PeerTube link into the Mastodon UI and then it will add it as a comment. Also if you follow the account, the post shows up in your feed and you can reply to it. Whether your reply shows up on PeerTube, that’s another story

  • This is the same problem as across all other Fediverse problems. If you’re looking at a PeerTube video on the PeerTube instance, you have to go & view it on your Fediverse instance to leave a comment on it – Ryan Barrett

  • https://nham.co.uk/ to find new music on the Fediverse using FreeCamp – Olivia

  • There are a lot of issues leaving comments across the Fediverse but we do need the simplicity to allow leaving comments. Micro.blog is trying to do something like that – Manton Reece

  • Commenting does work on some videos/instances: https://spectra.video/w/oJ5pj65wXCfGAbJ4KMNN9t

  • You shouldn’t have to always go home to interact. Needs more Oauth accounts and clients. People are working on this including building your identity into your browser (social browser) but we have a lot of work to do to head that direction – Ryan Barrett

  • It would be massively beneficial to be able to see a PeerTube video on my Pixelfed and comment and it goes to both, and if it then gets shared on Mastodon it’s part of the package. An instance could choose not to use posts from certain platforms. – Ian Forrester

  • If people were syncing en masse would TikTok shut it down? They’re scraping rather than using API. (Even without mass, a user is essentially scraping and they are at risk of having their account suspendeD)

  • This isn’t a long term thing and none of us have the resources to fight it in the courts. We need to move to APIs if they are available.

  • Jenjen has also been doing great work with community but not on peertube but owncast. We want to attract creators to the Fediverse but we want to encourage healthy platforms (i.e. not shortform content) – Olivia

  • Loops is on Android https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pixelfed.loops . We could discount all shortform content but it depends on multiple things, it’s not necessarily bad or good – Paulina

  • The appeal of TikTok for me is that its conversational; stich it and reply to them. It’s very sociable in a way that creating a longform video essay is not. What I long for is a Fediverse video platform that is conversational like that; text & video replies. If we’re going to build conversational cultures rather than celebrities, we need replies working. – Zoyander Street

  • Making it more accessible to more people. Shorter, not edited is easier for people to jump in. Similarly with podcasts. People should just jump in and try it without feeling it has to be super edited – Manton Reece

  • I don’t think it’s a coincidence that video replies ended when Google bought YouTube. Removing replies enables micro celebrities. Replies don’t support a business model. – Zoyander Street

  • Discussed having audio only social apps (Clubhouse)
