Notes
Georgia is a consultant in marketing and tech and works with creative niches ie dance, aerial acrobatic. Her particular art experiences a lot of censorship.
Ben is a developer/maker. Is the creator of Emissary, a fediverse developement framework, and has created a music platform at https://Bandwagon.fm.
D’Angelo founder of a startup, https://www.AllPeeP.com. Chatting with smaller record labels with promoting their artists. Interested in cross-communicating across platforms to help artists grow their audience and their income. One benefit is not having to create multiple identities across multiple platforms. Is charging artists to access the platform – allpeep.com.
Dan — more and more journalists are going independent.
Andy — Mastodon team with developer relations. Had a conversation with a former connection who works with musicians and was very interested in AP and the Fediverse. A number of friends who make music who’ve been turned off by social media because of all the reasons.
Ben is very excited about Andy’s comments earlier about Search for discovery on the Fediverse. He needs search for his endeavors! Specifically, being able to subscribe to a search engine result. For instance, can I search on a tag or keyword, then subscribe to that result set (as an ActivityPub collection, or whatever) and have those values pushed into my feed.
https://sub.club - a new paid / premium feed service.
Ghost is also looking into monetization for creators.
Kirsten is working in the area of discovery for artists with Patron Hunt and now live.theindiebeat.fm. Next step for The Indie Beat is to enable music creators to tag their tracks and albums to be available automatically for streaming on The Indie Beat.
Mia at Flipboard is really interested in music curation. Andy pointed her to bandwagon.fm, also radiofreefedi etc.
Andy - how do we help more artists and creators to embrace the Fediverse and make use of existing platforms and be successful (and then, for us making the Fedi, to learn from them to improve the platforms).
- Many of them are exhausted from regular social and being pushed to post stuff there by their labels or the need to do so themselves to keep their profile up.
Andy mentioned flohmarkt - “flea market” - ebay like marketplace for fediverse - is there an Etsy/creator/artist/merch connection there.
Can we make an interest group here between those of us interested in building tech for creatives that is federated? From the wrap-up Zoom: “Please announce any new group creations via the W3C Social Web Incubator Community Group mailing list. public-swicg@w3.org”
In re helping artists grow their audience, if we believe the fediverse is a place where they can have more success with that, putting together a Field Trip for Creative Mornings could be one great way to help bring them here.
Bottom up, “ground roots” and top down appraches to implementation.
Wish list:
- Private spaces where I can share non-publicly material with copyrighted music.
- Tagging for 18+ without being banned and without offending people who don’t want it.
- Ability to do transactions and payments of some kind (potentially between instances? more likely a redirect I guess).
- Ability to carry a fan network between instance providers.
- Category and tag feeds that people can subscribe to that will help new artists grow audience.
- “Pay to subscribe” like Patreon et al – that upgrades your subscription to an existing feed to show paid content.
- A “Universal Academic Directory” list where academics can register their Fediverse Handles and servers so they can be found by their colleagues, and past colleagues again.
- Groups for Mastodon or other platforms to support Universities, Departments/Disciplines, Interdisplinary Groups, and interuniversity deparments/disciplines.
